Natural History Museum of Mauritius
The central and largest nature museum on the island is in the capital city, Port Louis. The Natural History Museum is the oldest museum on the island, built in 1880. The museum now contains a fascinating variety of exhibits that give visitors the opportunity to learn more about the rich flora and fauna of the island, as well as collections of butterflies, insects and shells, replicas of marine life and geology exhibits. The museum even has an exhibit dedicated to the popular dodo bird that has been extinct since the end of the 17th century, and a huge library collection of more than 50,000 books.
