Port Louis Port Louis – the largest and most prosperous capital city of Mauritius. The city lies in the northwestern part of the island. A total of about 160,000 residents live there. During the day, the city bustles with life and activities, you will encounter traffic jams and quite a few vehicles and traffic lights, when you have to pay careful attention and drive carefully there. In the evening you will feel how much quieter and calmer the place becomes. The city is located around a port which is one of the most central and important places for the country’s economy and most of the international trade passes through it.
La Coden area
– This is the new area, with diverse restaurants, shops and commerce, it has a casino, a cinema. In this area you will feel the difference compared to the old environment and you will feel a little closer to the buildings we are familiar with and the more expensive restaurants.
Fort Louis Market
– The largest central market in Mauritius. It has everything from everything – meats, fish, souvenirs, wooden sculptures, clothes and spices. The prices in the market are very cheap and there is a great density suitable for central markets. However, it is highly recommended to go through it and feel the atmosphere, see the items that the locals sell, taste at the fast food stands the things that the locals prepare and enjoy.
Port Adelaide
– La Citadel fortress is on a hill overlooking the city. The place was built in the past by the British for war purposes – for this purpose it was built in an elevated area, on top of the mountain. This allows us today to see the amazing view of the city.
For architecture lovers:
You can visit the Juma Mosque from the 19th century, the building is very impressive and attracts a lot of tourists. In Port Adelaide you can see the Spanish citadel which is very reminiscent of the one built in Spain. Even the locals call it “Fortress” in Spanish.
For museum lovers:
Port Louis has three main museums – the Mauritius History Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Photography Museum. Entrance to all three is free. You can see many interesting things that will allow you to learn about the broad past of Mauritius, about its beautiful nature (including seeing a stuffed animal of the national bird uncle) and marvel at the spectacular photos taken over the years.
Our tips:
If you chose to spend the night in the capital city, you were there a maximum of two nights, and that’s a lot too. If you decide to visit certain areas and continue driving – the locals also warn and say that the recommendation is to park the car only in regulated parking lots and not on side streets. Although the vast majority of locals you meet will be nice and respectful, remember that as in any capital city with markets there are pickpockets – be careful and keep your valuables close to you.
